The Zen of Ducks

Watching ducks paddling along in the marsh channels is a kind of Zen thing for me.

Often seen two by two, they glide together slowly, as if they were one.

Side by side, or in single file.

Pressing into the water that fans out behind them…

Yet you never hear a sound.

But if you listen very carefully, really listen… you will hear them whispering softly to one another…

“Paddle on, paddle on, just keep paddlin’ on…”

A Message from the Brants

Just when I thought the world that I’d seen before me on my winter walk could not have gotten any greyer…

Or colder…

Or bleaker.

I returned to the car and saw a bright glow down along the shore.

So I went to look.

forestbeach65-blogAnd my, oh my!

The color and the light, the sky and the water were on fire with oranges and pinks and blues. What a welcome surprise to my hungry heart that had seen only gray skies, for days upon days!

And there, moving out upon the water I saw a pair of brants.

Murmuring softly to one another.

forestbeach66-blogI looked to the horizon, and marveled at how my world had changed just by coming down to the shore.

forestbeach67-blogAnd as I watched the pair out there upon the water, a peace fell over me when I finally heard what they were saying…

forestbeach68-blog“All is well, all is well…”

forestbeach69-blog“All is truly well.”

forestbeach70-blog‘Night everyone.  🙂

Peace Like a River

I went in search of peace this week. All week long I kept hearing that song over and over again that I knew as a child, I’ve got peace like a river, peace like a river in my soul.

The tide was unusually high at Forest Beach marsh when I arrived there just before sunset on Thursday. The water was a deep, moody blue and the marsh grass a burnt cinnamon color. A sinking sun seemed eager to head to bed for the night as it sent its long shadows out across the marsh.

forestbeachloop930-blogAt a distance I spotted several pairs of geese feeding in the bright sunshine.

forestbeachloop932-blogApparently excited about their tasty finds, the geese swam back and forth, rapidly tipping and dipping.

forestbeachloop933-blogCloser by, a group of brown ducks were quietly enjoying their own evening meal in the shadowy shallows.

forestbeachloop935-blogIt was then that I noticed we were not alone. Another group of Canada geese were busily grooming and feeding along the edge of the marsh as well.

forestbeachloop939-blogAs busy as they all seemed, everything was incredibly quiet, amazingly still.

forestbeachloop940-blogUntil one of them lifted up, flapped its wings in dramatic fashion before settling down again to feed and groom.

forestbeachloop938-blogJust then a song sparrow popped up out of the brambles, shook his tiny head and exclaimed, There’s always a ham in every crowd!

forestbeachloop943-blogThe geese seemed aware of me yet unafraid as I continued to stand there a bit longer, absorbed in their simplest of daily rituals.

forestbeachloop947-blogIt was then that I realized with a smile that I had found that peaceful feeling I had been in search of all week long.

It was right there in front of me, a gift from a tiny gaggle of geese. Flowing just like a river in my soul.

Sunday Morning Meditation

Sunday always feels like a day of rest to me. The pace is a little bit slower, the world just a wee bit quieter.

The backyard was especially still this morning. Even the hibiscus wasn’t moving a single petal.

SallyGarden206-BlogAnd just look who came back for a visit, perching nearly motionless in the old pine tree!

SallyGarden207-BlogToday will be the perfect time to get a few ducks in a row for Monday…

SallyGarden208-BlogDo some chores around the “barn”, maybe even stop out for a nap in the afternoon.

SallyGarden209-BlogKnowing me I’ll wind up knee deep in some hat project or other, that’s usually how it goes.

SallyGarden210-BlogYet I’ll hold onto this morning and how good it all felt. When I slipped away from the busy world all around me…

And whispered “hello” to the one that’s within.

SallyGarden211-BlogThanks for visiting me here at Images of Cape Cod.
