Make Way for the Beach Peas!!

Another familiar plant by the sea in the summertime are beach peas, or sea peas (Lathyrus japonicus).

From the legume family of plants, beach peas are wild, found all over the Cape, most often along dunes which is where I found these lovelies yesterday at Ridgevale Beach.

With beautiful long trailing stems, beach peas are actually edible (by mid-summer)…

And the bees love their subtley fragrant purple blossoms – almost as much as me! 😉
